Stirrorim: The Counter-Argument

On Realism

Whilst Mirrorism is inherently based on Lyotard's theories on jousting with the Grand Narrative, we also acknowledge the difficulties he outlines in achieving realism. Namely, that the capitalist system under which Mirrorism must operate is a combatant to our cause.

Lyotard believes that the system 'inherently possesses the power to derealise familiar objects, social roles and institutions to such a degree that so-called-realistic representations can no longer evoke reality except as nostalgia or mockery.' (The Post-Modern Condition 1979)

An example:picture the cover of a working-class novel. There before your eyes lies that typical tableau of a young child in torn clothes standing on a terraced, cobbled post-war street.

Mirrorism does not seek to argue against this truth, only to utilise materials Lyotard did not have: namely the internet and social media, to rise above the constraints of capitalism.
